Nisha Devi

This is the story of Mrs. Nisha Devi, wife of Surjit Kaur, a resident of Village Bhagbana, Panchayat Nagini, Block Nurpur. Mrs. Nisha Devi joined the Chinmaya Panchpiri SHG, established by CORD in her village in 2018. Her husband worked as a taxi driver. In 2019, he was involved in an accident, injuring his leg and hand, which resulted in the loss of his job. Mrs. Nisha Devi has two children: a daughter pursuing a BLLB and a son studying in +2. The burden of supporting the entire family fell on Nisha Devi after her husband’s accident.

During these challenging times, the SHG emerged as a beacon of hope for Nisha Devi, providing financial support through loans to meet her basic needs. She borrowed Rs 20,000 from the Chinmaya Panchpiri Self Help Group to buy a cow. By selling the cow’s milk, she began earning around Rs 10,000 monthly, which helped cover household expenses. Later, she purchased another cow with a loan of Rs 30,000 from her SHG, increasing her earnings to Rs 25,000 per month from selling milk.

Now responsible for her entire family, she took another loan of Rs 40,000 in 2021 to support her daughter’s law education. The Chinmaya Panchpiri Self Help Group has been instrumental in helping Mrs. Nisha Devi sustain her livelihood. Currently, Mrs. Nisha Devi plans to acquire another cow to further expand her milk business.
