Sushma Devi

I am Sushma Devi, a resident of Gram Panchayat Kandreri. Today, I am the head of the Gram Panchayat. I have been associated with CORD since childhood. During my school days, I joined a girls’ group that CORD formed in my village. By joining the Yuvati group, we attended many CORD trainings. I am grateful for being part of a girl group. They are the reason for my success. After getting married, I first joined Chinmaya Radhe Shyam Mahila Mandal, and since then, I have been a member of Mahila Mandal. My experience in my youth group benefited me further. Then, Mahila Mandal elected me unanimously as Deputy President of Mahila Mandal. Staying in Mahila Mandal, I learned a lot; it increased my leadership potential, and I learned how to strengthen my economic condition. After this, I formed the Chinmayam Krishna Self-Help Group, with nine members connected.

Self-help groups can benefit women as they can fulfill their needs and provide a strong support system. Women who had low incomes started generating revenue by acquiring loans from self-help groups, such as dairy farming. I started rearing vegetables and goats and took a bank loan to fulfill other needs and my children’s education. My son is in the police force, and my daughter has done pharmacy. After joining Mahila Mandal, I got a lot of recognition in my village and made good relations with the people. When the women’s seats were reserved in my Panchayat in 2021, people asked me to contest the elections, and I agreed. Four more women stood up to contest elections with me, but with the help of Mahila Mandals, I won by 285 votes. I became the head of the Panchayat to develop every ward under my jurisdiction and make every woman self-sufficient. I aimed to remove the discrimination between boys and girls, provide equal education opportunities, and create awareness among people about the prevention of drug abuse. I have done a lot of development work in my Panchayat with the help of CORD. I have also made a Panchbati Park in my Panchayat for the children. I organize the Mahila Gram Sabha in my Panchayat and get sub-gram meetings organized in every ward. I involve all the villagers in my Panchayat in making an action plan for development work and taking decisions on important issues. My strength is my Mahila Mandal; had I not been in the women’s group and Mahila Mandal run by CORD, I might not have reached this stage today. Behind all this is my Mahila Mandal, who always stands with me.
