Sushma Devi

I am Sushma Devi, a resident of Gram Panchayat Kandreri. Today I am the head of the Gram Panchayat. I have been associated with CORD since childhood. When I was studying in school, a girls’ group was formed by CORD in my village, of which I also became a member. By joining the Yuvati group, we attended many CORD trainings. Being in the girl group, all the credit goes to the girl group for whatever I am today. After getting married, I first joined Chinmaya Radhe Shyam Mahila Mandal, and since then I have been a member of Mahila Mandal. My experience in my youth group benefited me further. Then I was elected unanimously by Mahila Mandal as Deputy President of Mahila Mandal. Staying in Mahila Mandal, I learned a lot, increased my leadership potential, and learned how to strengthen my economic condition. After this, I formed the Chinmayam Krishna Self-Help Group, in which nine members are connected. Self-help groups are very beneficial for women; women have fulfilled their needs by joining the group. Women who had very little means of income started their means of income by taking loans from self-help groups, such as dairy. I started the work of rearing, vegetable production, and goat rearing, and I also fulfilled other needs and got my children’s education done by taking a bank loan. My son is in the police force, and my daughter has done pharmacy. After joining Mahila Mandal, I got a lot of recognition in my village and made good relations with the people. When women’s seats were reserved in my Panchayat in 2021, people asked me to contest elections, and I agreed to contest elections. Four more women stood up to contest elections with me, but with the help of Mahila Mandals. I won by 285 votes. The purpose of my becoming head was that I could develop every ward of my Panchayat and make every woman self-dependent, remove the discrimination between boys and girls, give the same type of education, and create awareness among people on drug prevention. I have done a lot of development work in my panchayat with the help of Cord. I have also made a Panchbati Park in my Panchayat for the children to play in. I organize the Mahila Gram Sabha in my Panchayat. And I get sub-gram meetings organized in every ward. I involve all the villagers in my Panchayat in making an action plan for development work and taking decisions on important issues. My strength is my Mahila Mandal; if I had not been in the women’s group and Mahila Mandal run by CORD, I might not have reached this stage today. Behind all this is my Mahila Mandal, who stands with me all the time.
