Deepa

Deepa grew up in a small village called Komakambedu. She and her sister went to Government school. Although they had good potential, their parents, being illiterate, could not guide them well. She attended evening tuition at CORD and participated in Balvihar and an adolescent girls’ group, where she was encouraged to develop good values and leadership skills. She faced gender discrimination at home, and her father wanted to marry her off at 17 while she wanted to study. A CORD team member, Smt Lalitha spoke to the father and stopped him. She further guided Deepa to pursue her undergraduate diploma education. As she grew up, she began volunteering and was trained by CORD to become a Balvihar Resource Person. She actively participated in all youth development programs organized by CORD and became a school teacher. Deepa is now happily married with two small kids. She is a Balavihar resource person teaching value education to 20 children in her neighborhood in Athupakkam Panchayat. Many girls like her have come to CORD for help or guidance; we counsel and motivate them in the right direction.
