Savitri Devi

Smt. Savitri Devi, a small farmer from Banu village in Rait block, Kangra district, operates on less than half an acre of land. In 2020, she began practicing natural farming after receiving practical training from a CORD team member. A member of Chinmaya Shiv Shakti Mahila Mandal-Banu and Chinmaya Parvati Self Help Group, her journey in agriculture hasn’t been easy. Initially, her land lacked irrigation and was vulnerable to wild animal attacks due to insufficient fencing.

Despite these challenges, 2020 marked a turning point when she embraced natural farming and started vegetable cultivation. Her family, including her husband and children studying in 8th and 10th grade, supports her in managing the farm. Post-training, she stopped using chemical pesticides and insecticides. Savitri now oversees the village Sansadhan Bhandar in Banu, established under a program to encourage natural farming practices among local farmers. Earning Rs. 4000-5000 per month from naturally grown vegetables, she has become a local inspiration.

Additionally, Savitri maintains a cow and poultry, providing steady income year-round. Her leadership extends to managing the Sansadhan Bhandar with her husband and guiding about 37 farmers in natural farming methods. Last Kharif season, she also pioneered millet cultivation, producing ample seeds for fellow farmers at her Sansadhan Bhandar.
