Success Stories of Tuni Sahu, CORD Deuladiha, Telkoi, Keonjhar, Odisha

Tuni Sahu, 42, from the village of Dhanurjaypur in Oriya Birda Gram Panchayath, Keonjhar District, embodies the adage that failure is a pillar of success. Her husband, Kailash Sahu, a local carpenter, found himself jobless post-lockdown. Faced with no income, Tuni and Kailash consulted with a CORD team member, openly discussing their challenges. They received guidance to leverage their Chinmaya Laxmi Narayan Mahila Mandal and S.H.G. group for agricultural loans.

Seizing the advice, Tuni and her husband initiated vegetable cultivation on 50 decimals of their 1.5-acre land, growing tomatoes, brinjal, cowpea, and chili. Starting with a modest budget of Rs 3,500, they earned a profit of Rs 2,500 after sales and personal consumption. Motivated, Tuni secured a Rs 10,000 loan from Maa Santoshi S.H.G. in December 2020 for expanded cultivation. She successfully repaid this loan and later took an additional Rs 40,000 to install a deep bore well.

In just one year, Tuni’s venture into vegetable farming yielded Rs 95,000. She now earns between Rs 7,000 and Rs 8,000 monthly, with expectations of increased income. Her efforts support her two children, a son in 6th grade and a daughter in 5th grade, marking a significant turnaround in her family’s fortunes.
