Asha Kumari
Asha Kumari, a 50-year-old woman from Sokni Da Kot Panchayat in Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh, epitomizes strength and dedication. Despite her 45% locomotor disability, she has been actively engaged with CORD for the last 23 years. Her education ceased in the 10th grade due to the challenges posed by her disability, but her journey didn’t stop there.
Asha’s family includes her laborer husband, Vinod Kumar, a son, and daughters, one of whom also suffers from intellectual disability and is involved with CORD’s program. Initially homebound, Asha’s interaction with CORD’s team members through regular counseling transformed her life, instilling confidence and knowledge.
With CORD’s assistance, she obtained her disability certificate, a Unique Disability Identity Card (UDID), and a monthly disability allowance of Rs. 1150. Additionally, she receives Rs. 3000 per month through the HP Sahara Yojna. This support, coupled with continuous education and training, propelled Asha to become the president of a CORD-facilitated Mahila Mandal and an active member of a Self Help Group.
Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish a dairy business, now yielding Rs. 3000 per month. Beyond personal achievements, Asha serves as a Village Volunteer Resource Person for CORD, advocating for people with disabilities in her panchayat. She is pivotal in connecting them with CORD’s programs and accessing their entitlements.
Asha’s influence extends to organizing World Disability Day celebrations in her panchayat and sharing stories of resilience within her community. She is a beacon of inspiration, advocating for women’s independence and societal contribution. Her life is a testament to overcoming adversity with courage and becoming a source of inspiration and support in her community.
