Sajan Chaudhary

Sajan Chaudhary, a 19-year-old from Siyund Panchayat in Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh, lives with his parents and two sisters in a Below Poverty Line (BPL) family. Diagnosed with major Thalassemia in childhood, he requires bi-weekly blood transfusions, leading to extreme fatigue and concentration difficulties. Despite these challenges, his warmth and enthusiasm shine through, especially in his twelfth-grade humanities studies.

Three years ago, a team member from CORD identified Sajan, helping his family obtain a 60% disability certificate, a Unique Disability Identity Card, and a monthly disability allowance of Rs. 1150. CORD further supported the family with Rs. 17,000, enabling them to start goat rearing—a venture Sajan passionately involves himself in daily, despite physical limitations and his mother’s concerns.

Goat rearing has proved crucial for Sajan, as doctors recommend goat milk for nutritional needs. Although his BPL status limits access to fresh fruits and protein-rich meals, goat milk provides a vital supplement. The family now owns six goats, two of which are ready for market. They plan to expand to 8-9 goats, relying on this income as a primary livelihood source.

Sajan’s story is one of resilience and determination, illustrating how he and his family, facing numerous hardships, work together to overcome challenges.
