Empowering Change: Advocating for Disability Rights in India

On January 11, 2018, Chinmaya Umang’s president, Mr. Rinku, Secretary Ms. Neelam Kumari, and Mr. Balbir Guleria from CORD, met with Sh. Rajiv Saizal, the Honorable Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of Himachal Pradesh. They submitted a request to implement and notify the guidelines of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD) 2016 in Himachal Pradesh, aiming to empower individuals with disabilities. The Minister assured them of appropriate action.

The following day, January 12, 2018, Sh. Rajiv Saizal visited the CORD Training Centre in Sidhabri, gaining insight into its comprehensive, integrated, and participatory rural development activities.

In collaboration with the CORD Training Centre, Sidhabri, the Kangra district administration selected three persons with disabilities (PwDs) associated with the program as District Icons for the 2019 Lok Sabha election. These icons include Sh. Mohinder Singh, Vice President of Chinmaya Umang, Ms. Jyoti Bala, a silver medalist at the 2017 World Winter Games, and Sh. Abhishek Bhatia, a young entrepreneur. This initiative, aligned with the Election Commission of India’s efforts, aims to make elections more inclusive and accessible for PwDs nationwide. It represents a significant step towards integrating PwDs into the democratic process at every level.
