Local self-government through Panchayati Raj Institutions

Strengthening grassroots democracy with participatory decision-making

Promoting participatory development in rural India

CORD’s focus areas for intervention in PRIs are at the gram panchayat level. With this thematic program, we are encouraging rural communities to participate in local governance and access government services. We achieve this by establishing Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) in ward-wise areas that work towards strengthening local self-government and mobilizing communities to participate actively in Upgram Sabhas and Gram Sabhas.

With our thematic programs, we focus on enhancing the capacity of elected village leaders in Panchayati Raj Institutions. We do this by promoting community participation and improving the delivery of essential services like education, MGNREGA, healthcare, and social welfare.
The focused gram panchayat model of CORD leverages government programs and schemes, bringing about their optimal utilization and convergence at the Mahila Mandal level, Upgram Sabha level, and Gram Sabha level.

The structural and operational model of CORD

The CORD model is about enhancing communities’ active participation effectively and democratically in local self-government.

Breaking barriers for women and children

We primarily work with communities in rural areas that are most in need of government services and support. This includes groups such as women, children, and marginalized communities who may have limited access to resources and opportunities.

We encourage and strengthen school management committees, and village health sanitation and nutrition committees as well as child protection committees in the Gram Panchayat.

By promoting local self-governance and democratic processes, we aim to enable these communities to advocate for their rights and participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives.

Enhancing rural communities across India

To improve the overall well-being and quality of life for rural communities, our interventions focus on several key areas, including:

  • Strengthening local self-governance and promoting democratic participation
  • Enhancing the capacity of elected village leaders to better serve their communities
  • Improving access to essential government services, such as education, healthcare, and social welfare
  • Helping women and marginalized communities grow by increasing their participation and representation in local governance

Collaboration. Advocacy.
Community upliftment.

We work through a participatory approach that involves collaboration with elected village leaders, community members, and government officials. Our program establishes Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) at the ward level that serve as platforms for community participation and advocacy.

With training and capacity-building support, we encourage elected leaders and community members to better understand and navigate government schemes and services. By doing so, we ensure that rural communities are able to access essential services and resources.
